We are now hiring and are looking to expand our team with experienced and hard-working individuals.  We currently have an opening for a Tail End Operator/Lead Hand for the 2023 season.  Start date is dependant on contract, weather and regional requirements.

Overview:

This is a seasonal position for an individual to join our paving team as a Tail End Operator/Lead Hand.  The primary function of the Tail End Operator is to adjust the screed height on the paving machine to ensure proper depth, grade and finish.  The candidate is also responsible for ensuring the consistency of the asphalt mat and the overall ride quality of the finished pavement.

The Lead Hand portion of the position is to primarily offer assistance to the foreperson. As a Lead Hand you will be expected to understand the fundamentals of paving as well as leading a paving crew. You will be responsible for assisting the foreman in day-to-day operations on site as well as with the crew, holding the responsibilities of the Foreperson when they are not present.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates lower operator panel to regulate the flow of material at a specified rate
  • Signals the paving machine operator to start and stop
  • Observes the distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution
  • Using depth gauge, verifies depth specifications of the compacted asphalt
  • Performs daily maintenance on tools and ensures all tools are stored properly at the end of each shift
  • Assists Foreman in the general operation of each job site
  • Installing/removing auto paving electronics
  • Adjustment of screed & extensions (MOBA/TOPCON)
  • Crew Training
  • Loading and unloading of materials
  • Communicating with Foreman on job specifications to meet requirements
  • Assisting in all other Paving crew labor duties
  • Knowledge of operating other pieces of heavy equipment
  • Responsible for equipment inspections and daily preventative maintenance

Qualifications:

  • 3 years’ experience running heavy equipment
  • Member of union 793 or the willingness to join
  • Valid G-License
  • Thorough understanding of construction procedures and safety practices
  • Working at Heights, WHMIS and MOL Supervisor training required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Working Conditions

  • Outside work (inclement weather)
  • High temperature work
  • Days, nights, weekends and overtime as needed
  • Physically demanding

The successful candidate will participate in a new worker orientation prior to commencing work and will be provided with required union training that must be obtained within 1 year of commencing employment.
