Job Summary

 

The Plant Operator has high level impact on the success of Fermar Paving Ltd. (“the Company”) Operations. The role is accountable for maintaining 24/7 operations and 100% machinery availability at a facility that provides the high-quality asphalt products needed during the Company’s entire paving season.

The incumbent communicates directly and in a timely manner with foremen on job sites and with customers, responding to their requests for materials. The Plant Supervisor maintains a strong focus on Safety as the #1 Priority for plant operations and ensures all procedures comply with all applicable Safety Standards, and the Company’s Safe Workplace targets including successfully maintaining COR certification.

The Plant Supervisor is responsible and accountable for demonstrating solid leadership and management skills acting in the best interests of the company and people at all times. The Plant Supervisor has the responsibility and ability to shut down the plant in the event of an emergency, and as such has a potentially substantial impact on Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership Oversight

  • Responsible for ensuring that the production of asphalt consistently meets the quality and quantity specifications of customers’ orders.
  • Responsible for the overall effectiveness of the Plant Team and on site Sub-contractors, providing them with clear direction and valuable feedback that improves their productivity.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with customers.
  • Proactively engages with vendors/suppliers to gain their support, and collaboration in finding viable, timely solutions to issues and problems affecting the successful operation of the plants (eg., break down of machinery).
  • Visibly champions the Company’s Safety in the Workplace programs, with a focus on achieving zero accidents/incidents as well as maintaining COR certification.

Operating

  • Responsible for the daily Pre-Job Assessment meeting to review planned orders and Plant activities.
  • Is available 24/7 to respond to situations involving the Plant equipment and its operation.
  • Orders aggregates and materials to meet scheduled demand, and responds effectively to meet ad hoc orders from Customers.
  • Collaborates with QC staff to provide samples from production to confirm quality level of the asphalt mix.
  • Ensures Safety Talks, Equipment Checks, Tailgates, Daily/Weekly Plant Maintenance, and MOL and MOE Inspections are completed in a rigorous manner, and all required reports are filed on time.
  • Records daily workers’ hours, and monthly inventory and submits to the Plant Manager for approval.
  • Logs all Materials and Production output and submits Daily, Monthly, and Annual reports.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • 3-5 years in construction or manufacturing plants.
  • Experience with heavy equipment/high volume production.
  • Working knowledge of asphalt plant and asphalt mixes an asset.
  • Some experience supervising others.

  • Sound organizational skills. Creates and maintains schedules ensuring optimal operations and safety requirements are consistently achieved.

  • Strong commitment to produce quality results/product (asphalt).

 Demonstrated Interpersonal (People) Skills

  • High level of personal stress management. Ability to retain focus while addressing challenges, and prioritize conflicting demands.
  • Strong Problem Solving skills. Independent and able to react quickly to make decisions for which there may be no formal guidelines. Requires little or no direction. Has the authority to shut down operations if needed to protect employees, equipment, or degradation in product quality.
  • Able to effectively communicate, applying sound judgement in an appropriately assertive manner

High intensity. 100% plant environment. Exposure to disagreeable elements (machinery, safety hazards).

 

Physical Demands

High intensity. Hands on machinery and tools. Extended hours of work. Lifting/Carrying tools and equipment up to 70lbs. On call 24/7.

 

Mental Effort

Moderate intensity. Occasional challenges that demand higher level impact, focus. On call 24/7.
